Financial Incentives
Washington State provides an annual base bonus of $5,000 to all eligible K-12 public school NBCTs. Teachers in qualifying challenging schools are eligible to receive an additional bonus up to $5,000 based on the teacher’s percentage of time spent at the qualifying challenging school
The state offers comprehensive support for teachers interested in seeking National Board Certification, including conditional loans that cover the majority of the application fee, Jump Start and Home Stretch candidate support programs sponsored by the Washington Education Association (WEA); and an annual NBCT bonus.
Fee Support
The Office of the Superintendent for Public Instruction (OSPI) offers eligible candidates conditional loans to cover the majority of the candidate fee. The OSPI loan is based in part on a series of essay questions the applicant must complete and some federal- and state-required demographic considerations. Applications are assessed by NBCTs from around the state.
While scores on the essays are important, they are not the sole factor in determining whether a candidate will receive a loan. All candidates are strongly encouraged to meet regularly with a candidate cohort group. Candidates who receive the OSPI loan are required to join a cohort group with an OSPI-approved support provider.

Reasons to Certify?
There are many reasons to become board-certified. Board-certified teachers prove their effectiveness in the classroom every day:
- Students learn more. A decade of research shows that students of Board-certified teachers learn more than their peers without Board-certified teachers. Studies have also found that the positive impact of having a Board-certified teacher is even greater for minority and low-income students.
- Teachers improve their practice. Board Certification allows teachers to hone their practice, showcase their talent in the classroom and demonstrate their dedication to their students and their profession.
- Demonstrate a commitment to excellence. Schools with National Board Certified Teachers are characterized by better teacher morale and retention and increased community involvement. Districts and schools that want to drive student learning recognize the power of Board certification and are taking steps to empower and raise the status of accomplished teachers.

Success Story
ADMISSION FEE WAIVED, FINANCIAL INCENTIVES: I wanted to further my education to become a better teacher, and heard about Teacher Resource USA from another teacher. I contacted Jeremy Flores at Teacher Resource USA about NBCTs, colleges, financial aid, grants, and loan forgiveness programs. My admission fee was waived, and within one month my financial aid had been worked out, and I was a real college student again! Three years later I earned my PhD in Education with a specialization in online learning. To my surprise, I received another call from Teacher Resource USA, to follow up on how I was doing. This time, I was able to get a tremendous amount of help getting the right forms and filling out the paper work for loan forgiveness programs. I was surprised they still had my information and called after 3 years to see how I was doing. I highly recommend Teacher Resource USA if you are considering earning a college degree or NBCTs and need the encouragement and assistance to make it happen! - Luanne P. Schnase, PhD
